What happens in an online literacy support session?

Wondering what online reading and spelling support actually looks like? Here’s an overview of how each session works, so you and your child know exactly what to expect.

During each online session we meet via Zoom, from the comfort of your own home. There’s no travel, no waiting rooms, and no need to travel. My years of experience and training comes right to you with just a quiet space, a device with a camera, and an internet connection. Sessions are one-on-one, so every minute is focused on your child.

We cover the core building blocks of literacy in a structured, step-by-step way. Depending on your child’s needs, this includes phonics (matching sounds to letters), decoding and blending words, reading fluency, spelling patterns, and comprehension. Every session follows a clear plan, so learning builds logically from one skill to the next rather than jumping around. A direct instruction approach is used as much as possible which involves ‘I do, we do, you do’.

We review what we worked on previously to make sure it has stuck. Regular review is one of the most important parts of learning to read and spell as it moves new skills into long-term memory and gives your child the confidence that comes from getting things right. We revisit tricky words, sounds, and patterns until they feel automatic. This can be achieved by digital word games, fun interactive activities and worksheets.

We address the specific areas your child finds difficult. Rather than a one-size-fits-all program, sessions are tailored to where your child is right now. If a particular sound, spelling rule, or reading strategy isn’t clicking, we slow down and work through it together in a way that makes sense for them. Unlike a digital program, every session is guided by your child’s responses and behaviour. I can instantly see what they’re understanding, where they’re getting stuck, and which patterns need more practice. This means I can adapt the lesson as we go, address errors that weren’t obvious in the initial screen, and keep your child engaged with teaching that is tailored to their needs.

Every session is warm, encouraging, and paced for your child to build both skills and confidence, one step at a time.
